What do you call those inflatable guys that flap around and announce that a store is open, or having a sale? They're unofficially known as Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tube Men. This crochet pattern shows you how to make a simple scarf base with arms.
What do you call those inflatable guys that flap around and announce that a store is open, or having a sale? Officially, it is an air dancer or fly guy. They are also known as Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tube Men. I call them happy flappy guys. At any rate, how can you not smile when you see one?

That’s why I made one into a scarf and now you can too! This crochet pattern shows you how to make a simple scarf base with arms. Then you make the letters, eyes, and smile as appliqués to sew on. Finish it off with some fringe hair, and then wrap this guy around your neck to bring joy to everyone who sees it!

The pattern includes instructions for making the word “OPEN.” If you’d like another word on your scarf, message me and I’ll help you with making different letters.

What you’ll learn: Linen stitch

Size: 8″ x 60″, plus fringe

Yarn weight: Worsted (4)

Yarn quantity: 600 yards

Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate.

Pattern type: Step-by-step written instructions with photos

Language: English with US terminology

Pages: 5

Note: This is a flat scarf, not a tube.

If you have any questions as you make it, I’m happy to help!
