Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to crochet a weighted blanket? Weighted blankets are known for improving sleep, calming anxiety, and helping with sensory processing disorders. Lying under one feels like an all-over hug.

Normally, weighted blankets have quilted pockets filled with plastic pellets — not an option with crochet, since the pellets would escape through the holes. So I decided to find a way to attach beads to the inside of a crochet blanket.

The trick is to make a 3-layer blanket with plastic beads embedded in the middle layer so you don’t feel them. The result is a soft, thick blanket with uniform weight distribution, perfect for added calmness.

The step-by-step pattern includes instructions for two sizes – adult/throw and kid size – or you can start with a different number of stitches to make your own size. Important:  Weighted blankets are not recommended for children under 4 years old.

The Stonefield Scarf uses a method called assigned pooling, where the color changes in the yarn determine where the puff stitches go. It requires variegated yarn, not color work, to achieve the desired result:  an array of stunning puffs that stand out from the background. What do you call those inflatable guys that flap around and announce that a store is open, or having a sale? Officially, it is an air dancer or fly guy. They are also known as Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tube Men. I call them happy flappy guys. At any rate, how can you not smile when you see one?

That’s why I made one into a scarf and now you can too! This crochet pattern shows you how to make a simple scarf base with arms. Then you make the letters, eyes, and smile as appliqués to sew on. Finish it off with some fringe hair, and then wrap this guy around your neck to bring joy to everyone who sees it!
