Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to crochet a weighted blanket? Weighted blankets are known for improving sleep, calming anxiety, and helping with sensory processing disorders. Lying under one feels like an all-over hug.

Normally, weighted blankets have quilted pockets filled with plastic pellets — not an option with crochet, since the pellets would escape through the holes. So I decided to find a way to attach beads to the inside of a crochet blanket.

The trick is to make a 3-layer blanket with plastic beads embedded in the middle layer so you don’t feel them. The result is a soft, thick blanket with uniform weight distribution, perfect for added calmness.

The step-by-step pattern includes instructions for two sizes – adult/throw and kid size – or you can start with a different number of stitches to make your own size. Important: Weighted blankets are not recommended for children under 4 years old.

What you’ll learn: Foundation single crochet, stacked double crochet, treble cluster, crocheting with beads

Size: 48″ x 60″ (adult) or 36″ x 48″ (kid)

Approx weight: 12.5 lb (adult) or 7 lb (kid)

Yarn weight: Worsted (4)

Yarn quantity: 6300 yards (adult) or 3600 yards (kid)

Materials: 8700 plastic pony beads (adult) or 4800 beads (kid)

Skill level: Intermediate.

Estimated time to complete: 100 hours (adult) or 60 hours (kid)

Pattern type: Step-by-step written instructions with photos and videos for special stitches

My son (now an adult) is a June baby, and I remember how hard it was that first summer to regulate his temperature when it was hot outside but cool inside. So, when I designed this Super Summer Baby Blanket, I wanted to make it light and airy but still cozy. The new stitch I created makes lots of tiny holes, which keeps the blanket perfect for warmer temperatures, without the big Afghan holes that little fingers can get tangled in.
